Tadoba Andheri Tiger Project is one of the famous Tiger reserves in India. The Tadoba National Park is among the India’s 28 Project Tiger Reserve with an area of  623 sq.kms. It is the oldest National Park of Maharashtra situated in the Chandrapur district. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve includes Tadoba National Park and Andhari wildlife Sanctuary. Tadoba has been named after the local God, “Taru” who was killed in an heroic fight with a tiger.The   local people offer their prayers  to “Tadoba Deo” with a belief that by offering prayers to Tadoba Deo and sprinkling the water of Tadoba lake on agricultural fields, there crops will be safe from any disease or pests. The Sanctuary is named “Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary” in the name of river Andhari which flows through the Sanctuary. Area of Tadoba National Park is 116 sq.km. & Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary is 509 sq.km. comprising of total  625 sq.kms. Tadoba was established in 1935 and declared a National Park in 1955 with 116 sq.km. area. Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1986, and in 1995, both the park and the sanctuary were merged to establish the present Tiger Reserve. Tadoba reserve comprises of the Chimur Hills, and the Andhari sanctuary covers Moharli and Kolsa ranges.

Tadoba National Park is a paradise for Wild life enthusiasts and it is also known as the ‘Jewel of Vidarbha‘. The wildlife sanctuary comprises of a varied range of flora and fauna such as Teak, Ain, Bija, Dhaoda, Bamboo, Haldu, Arjun, Tendu, Salai, Jamun, Mahua along with rare variety of indian wildlife.

Wild Life in Tadoba –

In Tadoba there are 80 species of mammals, 280 species of Birds, 100 species of Butterflies, 26 species of spiders, 30 species of Reptiles including 25 species of snakes, 5 species of Amphibians, 23 species of Fishes evidence.  There are 280 species of birds recorded in Tadoba which includes 50 species of migratory birds and 158 species of resident birds. During winter Bar-headed Goose migrates from Ladakh and Tibet at Chargaon and Sitarampeth tanks near the Protected Area. Tadoba has around 50 tigers along with some rare Indian wildlife such as, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Gaur, Wild Dogs, Hyenas, Civet and Jungle cats, Wild Boar, Four-Horned Antelope, Wild Dog , Langoor, Nilgai, Ratel, Flying Squirrel, Palm Civet, Indian Civet, Leopard Cat, Rusty Spotted Cat, Pangolin, Jackal and many species of Indian deer like Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgai, and Barking Deer. In Tadoba there is also a lake which has natural habitat of many water birds and Marsh Crocodile which were once commonly found in Maharashtra. Tiger, Panther are the major carnivores in this area which feed on the herbivores.  Sambar, Chital, boars and Gaurs are the most preferred prey hunted by the Tiger.

Bird Watching –

In Tadoba nearly 280 species of birds were recorded to be found namely Black-hooded Oriole, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Monarch Flycatcher, racket-tailed and White-bellied Drongo, Large Cuckooshrike, Oriental White eye, grey Hornbill, Grey Jungle-fowl, Golden Oriole, Large green barbet, Oriental honey & white eyed Buzzard,Indian Pitta,Paradise Flycatcher,Oriental Honey & White-eyed Buzzard, Indian Pitta, Paradise Flycatcher, Indian Roller, Orange-headed Ground Thrush, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Changeable Hawk eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Savana Nightjar, Painted Sandgrouse.

How to reach Tadoba –

Nearest Railway Station – The nearest railway station  is  Chandrapur which is  45 kms  from  Tadoba  is on the Delhi -Madras / Hyderabad  Route. Chandrapur  can  be  reached from  Mumbai by Dadar-Nagpur Sewagram Express which has 2 Bogies (2nd Class Sleeper) which are detached at Wardha and connected to the Wardha-Ballarshah Passenger.This  train reaches Chandrapur at 10.30 a.m. From Kolkata tourists can reach Nagpur by Howrah-Mumbai  express on  Friday at  2.35 p.m  and reaches  next  day at 8.20 a.m and Geetanjali express initiates daily at 1.50 p.m and reaches Nagpur at 7.20 a.m.

Nearest Airport –  The  nearest  airport  is  Nagpur  which  is 140 km  from  tadoba & can be reached by road via Umrer, Bhisi and Chimur. Regular flights are available from Mumbai / Delhi/Hyderabad.

By Road – Tourists can reach Tadoba by  bus or taxi from Nagpur which takes about 3 hours to reach there. Nearest  bus stand is Chandrapur and Chimur (32 km).

One State Transport bus plies daily between Chandrapur and Kolsa at 5.00 pm in the evening and returns to Chandrapur next Morning around 8.00 am.

Distance from Chandrapur – There are two entry points to enter Tadoba – Kolsa & Moharli where Entry permit is  to  be  obtained. Kolsa  is  45 kms  from Chandrapur which takes 1.30 hours to reach  via  Zari gate. Moharli  is 25  kms  from  Chnadrapur and it takes 1 hour to reach there.

Very Hot in Summer. Temperature  reachs upto 480 C in April/May.

from Chandrapur. Private Gypsies are available on hire basis daily near Moharli Gate for Jungle Safari in TATR Park.

There are two private resorts Saras and Tadoba at Moharli with good facility. 3 tents and a Faculty House is also  available near Moharli Gate. Presently this facility is stopped due to some repairs works in Faculty House.

Staying Facilities of TATR At Kolsa :- Forest Rest House is available with 4 Suites. The charges per suite per day is Rs. 200/- only.

Canteen is available for tourists at both  Kolsa and Moharli.

Reservation for accommodation at Kholsa FRH  can be done by sending a Money order/D.D. payable at Chandrapur in favour of Conservator of Forest & Field Director, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Chandrapur.

Guides –  It is mandatory to take an authorised guide at the jungle trips. Charges for the Guide Rs. 100/- per trip. Movement within the Tiger Reserve is allowed in vehicles only and taking a guide is compulsory. Tourists are not allowed to get down from their vehicles while on rounds.

Best time for visit at Tiger Reserve – The best season to visit is from February to May.

To enjoy the Forests – October to February.
To observe Wild fauna – March to May.
To observe migratory birds – December to February.

The park remains open throughout the year except the closed days mentioned below –
